will be ready for adoption in mid to late August once her heartworm treatment is complete. Petra came to us after being passed around from one person to the next. We tracked her history back to four different individuals/families from the time she was surrendered to an Alabama shelter last year. We estimate she's somewhere between two and three years old. She is still very much a puppy in attitude. She is fearful of new people but warms up after a few visits, especially if the new person plays "treat, retreat" with her. (Don't worry -- we'll teach her future adopter how to play.) She doesn't mind strangers on walks or elsewhere as long as they give her space. Once she trusts you, she is very loving and a typical velcro Doberman. She is high energy and needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Her favorite thing in the world is to RUN. She runs and plays like a little deer. She still needs a lot of patience and training but she will make someone a wonderful dog. Her perfect forever home will be laid back and not have a lot of new people coming and going. Ideally, she'd have one or two people in a home that can give her a lot of time and love. She is good with most other dogs if introduced properly over time and she seems more confident when around other dogs. She appreciates her crate and uses it as a safe space when she's nervous. Given her past and fearfulness, she cannot live with small children or cats.
